Game Contents:
The expansion essentially works the same way as the base game, but introduces a few new components:
– You can design the village a little differently, as you can now choose from 9 out of 10 village tiles
– There are new ghosts and new incarnations, some of which have the “Annihilate” ability, which can kill villagers
– At the beginning, there are 3 residents on each of the outer village tiles that must be rescued. If 12 of them die, the game is over.
– However, if you manage to save entire families (1-3 people per family), you can obtain certain artifacts that make your life easier, such as the Avenging Claw (for each failed exorcism attempt, you receive a Tao token).
– Moonstones act like Tao tokens of any color.
– Su-Ling takes her turn after curses, the death of a villager, or a flipped village space. She blocks a spirit’s middle active ability. She may also place moonstones on the urns if placed on the corresponding corner spaces.
– If all four urns are occupied by moonstones, the Mystic Barrier comes into play, which either sends one of the villagers directly through the portal or attacks an entire (!) tableau to expel the spirits. Since there are four urns, you can perform four of these actions.
Rating:
Since the Ghost Stories base game was always relatively difficult for us to beat, we hoped the expansion would introduce new game elements that would make life easier for the Taoists. At first, it’s relatively difficult to keep track of all the possibilities, but Su-Ling in particular has enormous potential! While you have to pay attention to a lot more than before (e.g., the ghosts now chase villagers away instead of directly flipping a space, but they can only flee if there’s space. If not, they die immediately), it does become a bit easier, especially in beginner mode.
Furthermore, the figures and markers are again very nicely designed and seem very robust.
